The lowdown on cleansing oils

You all know by now – we love a good cleanser. And we can’t imagine our skincare routine without a cleansing oil. What are cleansing oils, and how do they work? Should you include them in your skincare routine? Should you avoid a cleansing oil if your skin type is combination or oily? What is the best type of cleansing oil for the skin?

How do cleansing oils work?

Cleansing oils work on the principle “like attracts like.” Because of their lipophilic nature, they attract and dissolve similar substances like sebum and oils in sunscreen and makeup.
If you use cleansing oil as your first cleanse, it effectively removes sunscreen and makeup. But it also works with the skin’s natural oils to dissolve excess sebum and impurities caught in the pores. It does so without stripping the skin of its protective layer.

Cleansing oils are often formulated with esters and emulsifiers that make them easy to remove either with water or a wet face cloth. Cleansing oils clean thoroughly, as well as help hydrate, soften, and balance the skin.

Should you steer clear of cleansing oils if you have oily or combination skin?

It does seem counterintuitive. Why would you want to apply even more oil to your face if your skin is oily or combination? But you can use a cleansing oil, even if your skin is oily. It is just a matter of finding the right blend.

If you have ever tried a foaming cleanser with a high pH (often those marketed towards people with oily and combination skin), you know how these can leave the skin feeling squeaky clean. These types of cleansers can dry out the skin further. In turn, the skin overproduces sebum/oil, and it can make breakouts worse. Cleansing oil will leave your skin balanced and supple.
That said, you know your skin best. If you don’t like a particular oil, or you know it breaks you out, it is best to avoid it.

How to use cleansing oil?

Dispense one or two pumps of cleansing oil to your hands. Massage into dry skin for few seconds to get all the makeup and sunscreen off (don’t tug at the skin). Use a wet warm face cloth to remove. You can either rinse off with water or follow up with your second cleanser of choice.
Always use a clean face cloth to remove your cleansing oil. Dirty face cloths can be a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. You don’t want that on your face.
