Case Study 1: Visibly Improving Skin in a 33-Year-Old Woman with Acne, Dehydrated Skin, Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, and Fine Lines

Introduction:
The patient is a 33-year-old woman who presented with concerns regarding her acne, dehydrated skin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and fine lines. She had a history of using benzoyl peroxide during her twenties, which helped to reduce her acne, but over time, she noticed that it caused issues with redness, sensitivity, and suboptimal skin. She relied heavily on cosmetics to cover up the imperfections. After a consultation, the patient began a new routine of mandelic acid facial wash and regular mandelic acid treatments. The rest of her routine was kept minimal, consisting of a gentle ceramide-based lotion.

Assessment:
Upon examination, the patient had active acne lesions primarily located on her cheeks and chin. She also had evidence of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and fine lines. Her skin was dehydrated, with a compromised skin barrier, which is common in patients with acne.

Treatment:
The patient was started on a new skincare routine, which included a mandelic acid facial wash and regular mandelic acid treatments. Mandelic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that is derived from bitter almonds. It is known for its exfoliating and brightening properties and is gentle enough for patients with sensitive skin. The patient was instructed to use the facial wash twice a day and to apply a 10% mandelic acid treatment twice a week.

The patient was also advised to keep her skincare routine minimal and to focus on hydrating and repairing her skin barrier. She was instructed to use a gentle ceramide-based lotion daily. This was recommended as acne is often associated with a compromised skin barrier, and ceramide 6, in particular, has a role in maintaining clear skin. The lotion helped to improve the woman’s skin barrier function and reduce transepidermal water loss, which is often a contributing factor to dehydrated skin.

Outcome:
After six weeks of treatment, the patient reported a significant improvement in the overall appearance and texture of her skin. The active acne lesions had reduced in number and severity, and her post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation had begun to fade. Her skin felt more hydrated and less sensitive, and the fine lines had become less noticeable. The patient was pleased with the results and felt more confident in her appearance.

Conclusion:
Acne, dehydrated skin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and fine lines are common concerns in patients seeking dermatological care. In this case, the patient had a history of using benzoyl peroxide, which caused issues with her skin. With the use of a mandelic acid facial wash and regular treatments, along with a minimal skincare routine focusing on hydrating and repairing her skin barrier, the patient was able to achieve significant improvement in the overall appearance and texture of her skin. This case highlights the importance of personalized skincare routines and the use of gentle, effective products to achieve optimal skin health.

Case Study 2: A 19-Year-Old Woman with oily, sensitive skin prone to blemishes

Introduction:

This case study revolves around a nineteen-year-old woman who has been struggling with blemishes and breakouts. The woman has young, sensitive skin and has been looking for a solution that is both effective and gentle. She sought professional help and was recommended a face gel with succinic acid.

Case Presentation:

The woman presented with mild to moderate blemishes and breakouts. She had oily skin that was prone to clogged pores and pimples. She had tried various over-the-counter products with no significant improvement. She sought professional help and was recommended a face gel with succinic acid.

Succinic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that is naturally present in the body. It has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, making it an ideal treatment for blemish-prone skin. The face gel contained 2% succinic acid, along with other ingredients such as fruit enzymes, natural polysaccharides and botanical ferments which help to exfoliate dead skin cells and soothe the skin.

The woman was advised to use the face gel twice a day, after cleansing her skin. She was also advised to use a gentle cleanser and a lightweight azeloyl glycine moisturizer to avoid further irritation.

Outcome:

After several weeks of using the face gel with succinic acid, the woman’s skin showed significant improvement. Her blemishes and breakouts had reduced, and her skin appeared smoother and more even-toned. She reported feeling more confident and less self-conscious about her skin.
