Autumn is Here – Time to Undo Summer Skin Damage

Autumn is finally here, HURRAY! Pardon our enthusiasm, but we just cannot with summer. The heat, the sweat, the bug bites, all of it does our head in. Apart from taking a walk in the cool, crisp weather, autumn is the ideal time to undo any damage that might have occurred during the summer.

Routine change

At the risk of repeating ourselves, when the seasons change, it is time to switch up your skincare routine. A nourishing cleanser will remove the accumulated daily dirt without stripping the skin of its protective layer. A chemical exfoliant will speed up the cell turnover, refine the skin texture, treat hyperpigmentation and sun damage, and stimulate skin renewal at a deep level. Retinol will treat fine lines and wrinkles, and boost collagen production. All of these should be a part of your routine. If you never used an acid-based product or retinol or if you took a break over the summer, ease into it and start slow.

Antioxidant products

If you haven’t used a product with an antioxidant, now is the time to slot it into your routine. Free radicals damage our skin regardless of the season. They attach themselves to healthy molecules. Since our body cannot counteract the negative effects they have on our system, the body is subjected to oxidative stress.

Antioxidants have a number of functions. Not only do they protect the skin against external stressors, but they also photoprotect the skin against the sun, even out the skin tone and have a brightening effect.

If in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a vitamin C serum.

Visit a dermatologist

One thing most of us keep putting off is a visit to a doctor. Same applies to dermatologists. Needless to say, moles need to be checked at regular intervals. If by any chance (and heaven forbid) you need to have something treated and/or removed there is no better time for it than autumn.

Intensive treatments

If treatments like chemical peels or lasers are something you have considered for a while, you might want to give them a try in the autumn. Since these procedures can make your skin more prone to UV exposure, many dermatologists and specialists are hesitant to do these treatments during the summer months. Chemical peels will resurface the skin and even out the complexion. Likewise, lasers can treat dark spots, even out any blotchiness and boost the collagen production.

Don’t forget the sunscreen

All the efforts you put into your routine will be for nothing if you are not diligent about sunscreen. End of.
